Uncovered riding arenas are easier to build and less expensive.  Their use in harsh climates is limited.  The footing material and its construction are the elaborate and costly parts. 

Good drainage is imperative and is often overlooked due to the added cost.  A poorly drained arena is useless and may cause injury to the horses being trained on it.  Water cannons or moving sprinklers help keep the dust down in the dry season.

When you buy a farm with an arena and you don’t want it but do want a place to play basketball with your son, this is an option. When it’s time to resell the farm, the blacktop and sod will be removed to reveal a full dressage arena.
