Footings And Foundations

I am not an engineer or architect, but I know that if the barn is not a pole barn (the structure is attached to poles set in the ground), it’s a structure sitting on top of a footing or foundation.  This adds complexity and expense, so most horse barns are pole construction.

These images are of foundations of barns I have seen. Some are hand-laid stones, and others are solid poured concrete of different depts to level out the uneven ground underneath the barn.

Pegs soaked in home made boric acid to prevent insect damage. Copper plate between cement and post to prevent damage. All joints, slots, pegs and posts cut by hand .
